Dearest Reader:

Once upon a time, I wrote fun rom coms and marketed them a little bit to see if I truly loved writing and if I could do write and revise and revise yet again complete stories when the deadline was of my own making.

And you know what, dearest reader? I did. I wrote four books over the course of 2013 to 2015, when my second child was not even a year old, we moved homes, and my mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer (she was not a smoker).

It was the end of 2015 when I published my short story “Her Favorite Obligation” (now renamed “A Thankless Thanksgiving”). I put it up right before Thanksgiving 2015, as I was visiting my oldest brother at his home in D.C. That’s when my mom took a turn for the worse, and she eventually passed one day after her 67th birthday, in January 2016.

It’s hard to move past a death, especially a mother’s death. You think you’re okay, and then some psychological block manifests into a physical inertia. This lasted more than a few weeks or a few months. By the time I felt myself coming back from the barren lands my mom’s death had taken me to, Covid came.

In that time, though, I was still writing. I just didn’t publish anything. I wrote and finished and revised a YA about a teen superhero; I wrote another YA based on a 1980s rom com; and I wrote and revised and revised yet again another rom com, this one a fairytale retelling for the adult market.

Each of those stories are broken in their own ways, but they are waiting for me to fix them. But first, I will be posting a Christmas story on Amazon’s Vella. It’s a fun one. Very fun. I dictated it and revised it as I went. I’ll be announcing soon when it starts going live! I look forward to your comments on it.

In the meantime, I will be offering “A Thankless Thanksgiving” as a little present from me to you if you add your name to my newsletter list. I hope you do. I write newsletters like the fun acquaintance you meet at a supermarket once in a bluemoon, talk to for five minutes, and walk away with a smile on your face.
